What is Duolingo?
Duolingo is a language-learning website and mobile app. Users practice vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation using spaced repetition. Exercises can include written translation, reading and speaking comprehension, and short stories.
Duolingo was publicly released on June 19th, 2012. Since then, Duolingo has gotten quite popular, thanks to their strong presence on social media, allowing them to market toward many people. Currently, Duolingo has 441k followers on their Twitter, 540k followers on their Instagram, 2 million followers on their Facebook, and 2.5 million followers on their TikTok. Today, Duolingo has an active userbase of over 42.2 million total users.

You’ll notice that Duoingo’s mascot is an owl. This is becasue owls represent knowledge. There are currently 38 available languages on Duolingo. From Klingon to Navajo. If you’ve ever wanted to become a polyglot, then this is the app for you.
I am currently learning Mandarin. Duolingo features a linear-ish progression, starting with basic things like greetings, numbers, and how to introduce yourself. There are distinct sections and to unlock the next section, you’ll have to complete all the sections before that. If you already know how to speak part of a language, you can skip pass sections by taking a quick section test. Before starting each lesson, there is a “tips” button, which provides you with tips of things that you’ll need to know before practicing.
Duolingo uses gamified education to encourage people to continue such as through earning their currency “lingots,” leveling up, having a number of lives, and competing with other people.
