What is Riptide GP: Renegade?
Developed by Vector Unit on July 26, 2016, Riptide GP: Renegade is a racing game with a unique twist: Players ride on futuristic hydrojets. This allows for interesting and creative racing maps with the use of water.
Available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and the App store, Riptide GP: Renegade is a well polished mobile game that I recommend downloading. Let’s find out why.
Riptide has two main modes: Career (single player story) & Challenge (multiplayer.) In both modes, you play as a hydrojet racer, racing against others and trying to get first place.
Through winning subsequent races in Career mode, you learn the backstory of Impact, a hydrojet racer fallen from glory. You get to meet an cast of intriging supporting characters that you later have the opportiunty to play as, such as a partygoer, computer hacker, and a sentient robot. Following the main storyline in Career mode, you can also unlock side quests that focus on individual characters’ stories.
However, Riptide’s most prominent feature, in my opinion, is its death defying hydrojet tricks. On mobile devices, Riptide utilizes both of your thumbs to steer the hydrojet either left or right by holding down the sides of the screen. Whenever you’re midair you can use your thumbs to swipe up, down, left, or right simultaenously to perform tricks. Different combinations of swiping yields different tricks perform. To unlock more tricks, you have to spend your points earned from leveling up.
